Our day begins with a drive via the mysterious monoliths ofStonehenge to Salisbury where we view the cathedral with thetallest spire in Britain. Then we drive on to the city of Bath,which is famous for the hot springs which were first discovered bythe Romans over 2,000 years ago! You will have the chance to visitthe Roman Baths and to admire the elegant Georgian architecturebefore we continue to our hotel in Bristol where we dine tonight.(Continental breakfast / Dinner)Hotel: Ibis Bristol Temple Meads Quay
Day 5 - Bristol - Chester - Lake District
This morning we cross the Severn in to Wales and follow the WyeValley where we have views of the ruins of Tintern Abbey, only thesecond Cistercian foundation in Britain and an inspiration to bothpainters and poets. Then we head north to Chester where we see theRoman Walls, the cathedral and the black and white timberedbuildings, known as the Rows. Day 6 - Lake District - Glasgow
Today we visit the village of Grasmere where the poet, WilliamWordsworth, lived and wrote his most well-known poem, ''TheDaffodils'' and we also enjoy views of spectacular Lake Windermere.Then we head north to the Scottish border and Gretna Green, whereeloping couples married against their parents'' wishes. Finally, wecross the Southern Uplands to reach our hotel which is nearGlasgow. (Full breakfast)Hotel: Normandy
Day 7 - Glasgow - Scottish Highlands
After an orientation of this vibrant city we drive into thespectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands. First ''along thebonnie banks'' of Loch Lomond, past Inverary Castle, home to theDukes of Argyll which is a remarkable and unique piece ofarchitecture incorporating baroque, palladian and gothic styles.Then we continue via pretty Oban and Fort William which lies in theshadow of Britain''s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. The summit lies at4,409 feet above sea-level, but the main attraction formountaineers are the high cliffs of the north face, which are amongthe highest cliffs in the United Kingdom. Later we arrive in ourHighland hotel which is in the well-known Scottish ski-resort ofAviemore. (Full breakfast / Dinner)Hotel: Macdonalds Highland Resort
Day 8 - Scottish Highlands - St. Andrews - Edinburgh (2 nights)
We drive through Pitlochry, famous for salmon fishing which has a''fish ladder'' on the dam onthe rivers which enables the salmon to progress upstream inorder to spawn. Then we travel on to St. Andrews, where PrinceWilliam went to university, but perhaps more famous as the placewhere golf was born! So we will stop to take a picture of the 18thhole before driving on to the region of Edinburgh, the Scottishcapital and our hotel in Larbert. (Full breakfast)Hotel: Premier Inn Falkirk Larbert
Day 9 - Edinburgh sightseeing and at leisure
Our guided sightseeing tour this morning shows us the Royal Mile,Princes Street and the famous castle. It is in the courtyard of thecastle that the spectacular annual event known as the EdinburghTattoo takes place in August as part of the wider EdinburghFestival. Later there is free time to explore further and to shopfor souvenirs. Tonight, maybe enjoy a lively Scottish banquet withtraditional haggis and bagpipe music? (Full breakfast)
Day 10 - Edinburgh - York - Leeds
This morning we cross the Border country back into England anddrive through the Northumberland National Park where we see part ofHadrian''s Wall, which was built to keep out the Scots! Then wecontinue south, crossing the River Tyne at Newcastle, beforearriving in York, reputedly the most haunted city in England. OurTour Director takes us on a walk through the quaint streets knownas the Shambles and we will learn about the Vikings who invadedthis part of England and ruled over the city for nearly 100 years.Then we continue to our hotel in Leeds, where we have dinnertonight. Day 11 - Leeds - Coventry - Stratford-upon-Avon - London
We drive through the Midlands to Coventry to view the old and newcathedrals. The decision to build the new cathedral was made onlythe day after the old one was virtually destroyed by bombing duringthe ''Blitz'' in 1940. In 1950 a competition was held to find themost suitable design for the replacement cathedral. The winningcontroversial design came from Sir Basil Spence and the newcathedral was consecrated in 1962. Then on to Shakespeare''sbirthplace, Stratford-upon- Avon, with time to explore or shop.Next we travel through the pretty Cotswold countryside as we makeour way back to London where it is time to bid farewell to ournew-found friends and Tour Director at the end of our tour.
