When traveling alone, we understand that some travelers do not want to incur the expense of an additional single room supplement. With this in mind, on the majority of their itineraries, Trafalgar offers you the opportunity to purchase these trips on a room-sharing basis. They will accommodate you with a fellow passenger of the same gender on a ‘two-bedded’ basis (non-smoking rooms only). Please note that, regrettably, they cannot guarantee that roommates will be of a similar age group. Even so, it is an enjoyable way to travel and get to make new friends, and a positive way to stretch your vacation budget. If Trafalgar is unable to match you with someone, they will provide a single room at no extra cost. |

" It’s taken me three months to think this trip report out, but I am finally ready! This trip was an early 40th birthday present from my parents, now I haven’t traveled with my parents for extended period of time since I was a teen, so it was quite the challenge getting adjusted to their lifestyle once again, but we made the best of it. The 90+ degree heat and poorly air conditioned rooms didn’t help either, but it was still an experience of a life time! Day 1: We flew over night direct on Lufthansa from LA to Munich, the flight was perfect, we arrived in Munich at around 4pm at were in our transfer bus by 4:45 to our hotel, the Hilton. We were greeted at the lobby by our tour guide, Paul, who like us, had arrived a day early. Instead of going to the Marienplatz for dinner, we walked around the corner and found a lovely neighbor hood with a ton of cafes and had a nice dinner at an Italian diner for 38 Euros for the 3 of us including wine. Day 2: We decided to check out the shops across the street from the hotel, there was s supermarket where we bought water, I always enjoy checking out products in other countries. We then walked over to the Marienplatz, checked out some churches, had a gelato and went back to the hotel to freshen up for our orientation. Our tour group ranged in ages from 11-80, and consisted of Austrailans, Americans, and New Zealanders. We were taken by bus to the Marienplatz were we waited for the famous "Glockenspiel" clock to do it’s thing, yeah, it’s as enthralling as it sounds….We didn’t go, as per the brochure, to check out the rest of the city, because we were missing 4 tour members because they missed a connecting flight in DC, so we were told that we would be seeing what we missed what we came back at the end of the tour. We returned to the hotel for our welcome drinks, then the parents and I returned that that Italian diner for dinner again, then off to bed! Day 3: We had breakfast at the hotel, which had a wide selection of meat, cheeses, but delicious kiwi fruit for some reason, then hoped on the bus for the long journey into Prague. The German country side was nice, but kind of reminded me of Wisconsin, except with more castles off in the distance!! We made a pit stop in the city of Nuremburg, where we checked the gorgeous medieval town square and a race track where Hitler gave some of his long winded speeches. At the Czech border we stopped off at a McDonalds to grab a snack and use the restroom. On the way into Prague we drove threw Pilsen past the giant beer factory, the town looks very run down and covered in graffiti with large "cold war" era buildings in the background, kind of depressing , really. We arrived in Prague around 4 at the Hilton, then had dinner at the hotel, then we took the optional Prague by night tour with our local guide, Alexandra. The tour began at the Prague castle which had a gorgeous view of the city at sunset, then we made our way to a small bar where a local musician played an accordion and we were served some beer. There I had a brief hockey chat (CZR is a huge hockey country) with Alexandra about hockey legends Jagr and Hasek and commented on Ondrej Pavelec’s (Czech national team goalie/Winnipeg Jets goalie). Hearing her say "oooh, nice man, big and strong" in that accent was priceless! Then we went to the old town square where we took a little train ride thru town, the city at night is just unbelievable, it’s like you are stuck in a different time or living in a dream. We were then driven back to our hotel and off to bed for the next full day in Prague. Day 4: Breakfast at the hotel, which had a huge selection, then off to the city tour which started at the Prague castle and the palace. The palace isn’t very impressive, but the view is amazing. We only saw the exterior of the St. Vitus Cathedral since it was a Sunday and they were conducting services. I am pretty sure the prime minister tried to run us over in his Skoda as were exiting the parliament building which made for some excitement! After that we were dropped off at the town square to check out the astronomical clock which was, well, not very interesting but drew and impressive crowd. After that, we were on our own to shop and explore. We hit the market place where I got a Czech National team Jagr jersey for my son for only 8 Euros and a Czech National team scarf for 6 Euros for a friend. Then my parents and I went our separate ways as they took the Vltva River Cruise and I met up with a friend from my hockey boards for lunch. Petra and I had lunch on the outskirts of town at a small café, we had deep fried cheese with fries topped off with delicious expresso, odd I know. We talked about our hockey loves as well as exchanged stories about our familys and lives in our different countries. She told me that during the cold war years the best feeling ever was to have a Madonna or Michael Jackson album in your hands because they were so rare! We took the trains and subways and she showed me the parts of town you would never see on a tour. Definitely the best part of the trip, was the couple of hours I spent with her!!! Nothing like a local having showing you their town! Day 5: I was very sad to leave Prague, this city really won my heart and I felt like I didn’t spend enough time there and the time I did spend there felt so rushed, our next stop on the way to Budapest was Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. I had been looking forward to visiting this city since one of my favorite goalies, Jaroslav Halak , if from there and it was mentioned in "Eurotrip". Not much to see in Bratislava, even the locals looked bored, we were dropped off at the small town square, there were several small shops, but they were expensive, ate at the McDonalds and picked up some soccer and hockey souvenirs for my sons and friends. We arrived at Budapest late afternoon and stopped at a mountain top for pictures, the view was spectacular, while parts of the city are very run down, the architecture is quite breathtaking! We arrived at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and I almost cried tears of joy when I discovered they had free Wi-Fi! Then we were off for the optional Danube Dinner Cruise. The Dinner Cruise was one of my favorite optionals, the food was delicious, they had the traditional goulash, some sort of cheese covered chicken, a wide variety of vegetables, two delicious potato dishes and local desserts. I should add that wine was included in ALL of dinners, optionals included. Seeing the parliament lit up at night was quite the sight and great for picture taking, plus there was a nice warm breeze. If you are going to take one optional or just some, I highly recommend this one! Day 6: Early morning, weak breakfast selection, but the local "cream of wheat" was delicious, time for another optional tour, this time it was the parliament tour. Maybe it was the 100F/37C heat, the fact that I had a nasty cold, the lack of air conditioning or what ever, but I was not impressed by this excursion at all. I just found the interior to be quite boring and they were very strict about taking flash pictures. I forgot to note that before our tour of parliament we made a brief stop at Monument Park then went to the Fisherman’s Bastion where we took our group picture. Fisherman’s Bastion had great views and provided excellent photo opps. After the parliament tour it was off the the quaint medieval town of Szentenre for lunch and shopping. Szentendre was nice, the restaurant was quirky with musical instruments all over the place and cool wine dispensers. The stores were a bit on the pricey side, but you could haggle with the owners and even pay with dollars, all in all not a bad deal and a nice, quaint, quiet town. Dinner was at a local restaurant/winery where we tasted local wines and had a great dinner with more wine. My parent were present with more wine, when our TD discovered that they had celebrated their 50 year wedding anniversary earlier in the year, that was a nice touch!
My parents really enjoyed the lunch cruise, said the food was great and the drinks were plentiful, also said it was a great way to see the city. We decided to walk back to the hotel since we missed the last bus, but we got lost and it took us 45 minutes to get back, and had to cross a traffic filled intersection, not fun! We barely made it in time for our dinner at a hill side resteraunt.
